Factors vs. Multiples

"Factors are Few. Multiples are Many!" - Mrs. Scheffer and other Math Teachers

It is important that students understand the difference between a factor and a multiple.  A factor is another word for a divisor. In other words, a factor is a number that can divide into another number without any remainders.
A multiple is made up of two divisors/factors that are multiplied together.
For example:  3 x 6 = 18.   3  and 6 are factors of 18. 18 is a multiple of both 3 and 6.

Factors are limited, whereas Multiples can go on endlessly.
"To Infinity and Beyond..."

Factors of ...
12 = 1,2,3,4,6,12                    22- 1,2,11,22

5= 1, 5                                     9 = 1,3,9

All numbers except for 1 have at least two factors, 1 and the number itself.
"ONE is the LONELIEST number that could ever be...."
Prime numbers - only have 2 factors
Composite numbers - have more than 2 factors
Square numbers have an odd number of factors. Example 16 = 1,2,4,8,16

Multiples of...
3- 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33,36,39,42...infinity!

Check out the multiples rap that we sang in class. Thanks, Super Creative Mr. Lee
