READ! READ! READ!
This year in reading, we will be using the AR format as well as reading class novels and focusing on various reading skills. On a normal day of reading, students will be expected to have and read an AR book that is within their assigned level. Students will be given time (approx. 20-30 minutes) of silent reading in class. During this time, they will either complete online reading through Moby Max, or independent AR reading. The remainder of class will focus on skills.
In sixth grade, our big focus is READING because it is truly the foundation for success in every other subject. Students will be assigned an AR goal that is based upon 45 minutes of reading every day. This means that students should be reading every night for about 20 minutes. We do not give a lot of homework, so on days that students say they have none, they can always read or do Moby Max to get the weekly assignment done.
Summaries are a big focus in 6th grade as well. Students should keep an online/or a hard copy of short 1-2 sentence summaries of what they read each day. A total of 20 will be due at the end of the quarter.
